Symptoms of car ignition issues

Arlington Heights Transponder key

Are you having auto ignition issues? Could you tell if you were? That’s the odd part about auto mechanics; you often can’t really diagnose a problem on your own because most parts are interconnected. It’s much like the human body; your heart and your teeth have little to do with each other as far being directly connected and human body functions go, yet a tooth infection can lead to heart disease down the road. It’s much the same with your car’s ignition system; if you try and start the car and nothing happens then you obviously have car ignition problems; or do you?

Here at Locksmith Service Arlington Heights we service auto ignition systems on a regular basis. That’s part of our job as full service automotive locksmiths in the local area. But you don’t have to live here in Arlington Heights, IL in order to get your car’s ignition system serviced; read on and see what we recommend. You may not even need to call any repair specialist at all!

Uh oh!

You have a destination planned and all is set to go. You grab your set of keys and get in your car. After buckling up you inset the transponder key in the ignition. Nothing happens when you turn the key. Maybe you can’t turn the key; maybe the key won’t come back out, either! Many thoughts flood your brain at this point. Will this be an expensive car repair? Do you need to call a tow truck? Will AAA be of help? Can you call Uber or Lyft in the mean time? What could possibly be wrong with your car’s ignition?

Not so long ago

There was a time in the past when car ignitions just started engines and not much more. You hopped in your car and turned the ignition key, starting the car. Nowadays, with a seemingly endless array of gadgets and features to power, our ignition systems power up radios, power seats, windshield wipers, headlights, power windows, heater, GPS system and lots more. The more parts and features, the more things that can break!

So what are the signs that I have ignition issues?

Are there certain signs that indicate an ignition system problem? Yes, there are. Have you noticed that your ignition switch is overly hot to the touch? This is a sign that you may have a loose connection or a frayed wire. A damaged part of the ignition switch itself could also be the cause. If you notice any of these problems, or if your ignition-switch just feels hotter than usual, be sure to call for professional repair as soon as possible. Another clue that something is not working right with your ignition is when you turn the key and the engine does not turn over. In fact, nothing happens. On the opposite side, if you insert the ignition key and turn it and the engine continually turns over andover, then there may be a short in the electrical system.

Maybe it’s your battery and NOT your ignition

If you inserted your transponder key and tried to start your engine but couldn’t, the problem may be a run-down battery and not your ignition system at all. While that might sound confusing at first, there is a very simple way to tell if your ignition problem is, in fact, due to a run-down battery. Simply try the other components that run off battery power and see if they work or not. As stated earlier, these include power seats and windows, radio, GPS system, headlights, and windshield wipers. Be sure to apply the parking brake first when tinkering with your car or any of its parts. You’ll want to stay safe and not start rolling backward or forward while you are pre-occupied with diagnostics. Anyway, if any of these components still work, the problem is not your battery and could actually be your ignition system.

Does this happen?

Have you noticed your car choking out while idling at a red light or stop sign? If so, this is another sign of possible ignition issues. We’ve heard from some customers that have to put the car in park and rev up the engine a bit just to keep it running. If this sounds like your car’s behavior, get professional service for it as soon as possible as you don’t want to be on the freeway or highway and suddenly have engine failure!

Do you get a red warning light?

Have you noticed a red warning light on your dashboard? You might have seen it when you were testing your radio or windshield wipers during battery check earlier. If you did see this light, the problem is not your ignition system, however you do have a problem somewhere else so it’s best to have it checked out.The problem might be faulty brakes, a run-down battery or maybe a bad transmission. If the problem really was your ignition system, the red light would not have turned on.

Are you in PARK? Make double sure!

This one really throws drivers off course (and it’s so simple to fix!). Make sure that you are in PARK when trying to start your car. This is one of those times where almost is not good enough! Apply your parking brake and then check your gear to ensure that you are solidly in PARK and nothing else.

Car won’t turn off!

If you can’t turn off your car and stop the engine, you just might have a problem with either the ignition switch or the ignition lock itself. You may need a new ignition switch, or key tumbler assembly or both. Get this checked out as soon as possible.

What should you do now?

If none of these recommendations have worked, it’s time to get professional help. If you are a professional mechanic or locksmith you’ll know what to do; if not, you should call one. An established automotive locksmith will be able to offer convenient mobile service, 24-hour emergency help and usually same day service.
